The short answer
LibraBorn October 1–22LibraScorpioBorn October 23–31Scorpio

October is split between two zodiac signs: the Sun finishes its run through Libra and enters Scorpio around October 23. So your October zodiac sign depends on the day — and, if you're born right at the boundary, on the year and hour too.

Born around the boundary?
The Sun doesn't change signs at midnight sharp: the exact moment shifts by up to a day depending on the year and your time zone. If your birthday is October 22–23, don't guess — check your exact sign by date of birth.

What October people have in common

October is autumn's air and water: Libra's diplomacy and Scorpio's depth. October people share strength in relationships: some build bridges, others test them for load. Neither tolerates fakeness.

Within each sign the flavor shifts by decan — ten-degree thirds of the sign. Born the 1st–9th, you're in the second decan of Libra: its core with a shade of Aquarius. The 10th–22th is the third decan, tinted by Gemini. From the 23th you're in the first, purest decan of Scorpio. That's why people of the same month, born ten days apart, can feel so different.

October's birthstone is the opal: the stone of imagination with its shifting play of light, a traditional talisman of creative people.

The Libra in short

LibraLibraSeptember 23 – October 22
Libras think in "we": charming, fair, allergic to ugliness and conflict. They balance rooms, mediate wars, and their real work is learning to choose without fear. In love they seek the beautiful «we»; Gemini, Aquarius and Leo balance them best. Ruled by Venus, air element: keep the discourse kind — harmony is not their weakness but their art form.

The Scorpio in short

ScorpioScorpioOctober 23 – November 21
Scorpios do nothing halfway: intense, loyal to the bunker, perceptive enough to undress motives. They love for real or not at all. In love they offer everything and expect the same; Cancer, Pisces and Virgo pass the trust exam. Ruled by Pluto (classically Mars), water element: earn the depth once and it never leaves you.

Frequently asked questions

What zodiac sign is October?+
October covers two signs: Libra from the 1st through the 22th, and Scorpio from the 23th through the 31th. The boundary day can shift by one day depending on the year — a birth chart settles it exactly.
What sign is October 23?+
On the average year, October 23 is the first full day of Scorpio — but in some years the Sun crosses the line a few hours earlier or later. If that's your birthday, the free calculator on our dates page resolves it from your exact date.
Why does October have two zodiac signs?+
Zodiac signs follow the Sun's position, not the calendar: the Sun spends about 30 days in each sign, entering a new one around the 20th–23rd of every month. That's why every calendar month is shared by two signs.
Who are October-born people compatible with?+
It depends which of the month's two signs is yours. Libra is a Air sign: it pairs most easily with its own element and its complement. Scorpio runs on Water — a different circle entirely. The two sign cards above link to the full compatibility breakdown of each with all 12 signs; for a specific couple, a synastry of both full charts settles it.
