Three to four times a year, Mercury appears to move backward across the sky for about three weeks. Nothing actually reverses — Earth simply overtakes the smaller, faster planet on the inside, the way a car you pass seems to slide backward. Astrologers also track the pre-shadow and post-shadow: roughly two weeks before the retrograde begins, Mercury crosses the degrees it will later re-cross backward — and two weeks after it ends, it re-covers them a third time. In practice, tradition reads the pre-shadow as the season when the themes show up (the deal that will need renegotiating, the conversation that will need repeating), and the post-shadow as the clean-up lap. The honest takeaway: don't stretch three cautious weeks into seven anxious ones — just don't be surprised if a retrograde story begins slightly early or takes a few extra days to fully close.
