For a night or two the sky stays moonless — which is why you can't actually see a new moon, only the thin crescent that follows it. Black Moon: when a month has two new moons

Because the lunar cycle runs 29.5 days, a calendar month occasionally fits two new moons — the second one is popularly called a Black Moon. It's the mirror twin of the Blue Moon (a month's second full moon), happens roughly once every 29 months, and looks exactly like any other new moon — that is, like nothing at all. Astrologically some practitioners read it as a double-strength fresh start; astronomically it's a calendar coincidence, and we flag it in the table above when one occurs. Don't confuse it with Black Moon Lilith — that's a calculated point of the lunar orbit, a different thing entirely.
